Girl I've been dating for about 2 months put me down as her emergency contact without telling me...

I (28M) have been seeing a woman (27F) for almost 2 months. We've been on 7 dates and aren't exclusive yet. Yesterday she mentioned she updated paperwork at work and put me as her emergency contact.
Her parents live in another country and her closest friend recently moved away, so she wanted someone local who would answer. She said I'm the person she'd trust most right now. I told her I thought she should have asked me first. She looked surprised and said she didn't think you needed permission to list someone as an emergency contact.

We've gotten close, but being the person her job calls if something serious happens feels like a big responsibility after 7 weeks. Would this bother you?

Commenters gave their opinions on the situation.

Due_Adeptness_1964 Kind of making a bigger deal at this then you should. It should really make you view her life and see that she doesn't have the support system that others do. I'd be less upset and more sympathetic.

Summer_is_coming_1 She's a foreigner and genuinely she needs someone as emergency contact. It is really not a big deal. Chill man

cherxza No and I think if you liked her it wouldn't be a big deal

Foreign-Editor-892 I don't know, maybe I'm crazy, but this doesn't seem like that much of a red flag to me. I think it really depends on her mindset and what she expects from you because of it. She said she wanted someone local who would actually answer, and if you're genuinely the only

person she trusts nearby, that makes sense to me. If something serious did happen, you could contact whoever else needed to know, like her parents.

That being said, I'm not denying that putting someone you've only been dating for seven weeks down as your emergency contact without asking them first is a little intense. I can understand why that caught you off guard. But personally, I wouldn't view it

as a deal breaker or automatically assume it means something concerning. I'd be more concerned if she expected you to take on some huge responsibility because you're her emergency contact.

Otherwise, given that her parents are in another country and her closest friend moved away, I can understand her reasoning.

PulinOutMyPeter My brother. You are 28. This isn't a high school drama. She trusts you. It sounds like you guys aren't exclusive because of things with you. But be more sympathetic. Its not a job. Its a basic thing to be there for someone when their world is flipped.

kai333 I dunno she's showing vulnerability, so sounds like she likes you. You like her?
via Brief-Holiday-1250
Worried_Raspberry313 I wouldn't care to be fair. But I don't know if this is something cultural. I mean if things work out and you end up being a happy couple, then great. If you don't like each other anymore in 2 months, then she'll remove

you from the emergency contact list. Or not, but who cares. 99% they're not gonna call you and even if they call you, you can always ignore it.

clueless_daisy I feel like I'm crazy reading all these comments. Putting someone down as your emergency contact after 7 dates, not exclusive, is insane. You don't even know if this person is going to be in your life long term.

That said, OP, are you sure she knows you're not exclusive? Putting your boyfriend down as an emergency contact makes sense. Putting a guy you just started dating? Weird.
